banner_nn_gb_600.jpg

2009 has been declared by the United Nations as the International Year or Astronomy and will be a global celebration of astronomy and its contributions to society and culture, highlighted by the 400th anniversary of the first use of an astronomical telescope.

The aim of the Year is to stimulate worldwide interest, especially among young people, in astronomy and science.

In the UK local astronomical socieites will have a key role in delivering events for the general public and young people through schools and youth organisations.

These pages will keep you up to date on plans, events and provide resources to help make your events successful.

The regional groups are of great importance to the FAS. We are also aware that these groups always find it very hard to support their activities without relying on individual societies. The FAS is glad to announce that we are, for the International Year of Astronomy, able to offer small funding opportunities for regional activities. Applications should be received by October 20th (e-mail only) and all awards will be decided on at the November council meeting. Please see our online form for more information. If you require further guidance please contact the Secretary.
