Persephone: Pluto System Orbiter and Kuiper Belt Explorer

Wednesday 7 October 2020 at 7:30 pm UK Time

By Dr Carly Howett: Assistant Director of the Department of Space Studies, Southwest Research Institute, Boulder, Colorado, USA

About the Lecture: Persephone is a NASA-funded concept mission study to investigate the feasibility of sending a mission to orbit within the Pluto system and further investigate the Kuiper Belt.

We will discuss the science motivation for returning to Pluto, as well as the complexities and difficulties with sending a probe to Pluto. Dr. Carly Howett (SwRI) is the Principal Investigator of Persephone, and is the Deputy Principal Investigator of the Ralph Instrument on NASA’s New Horizons mission (which encountered Pluto in 2015).
